Background of the Study
Social media trends significantly influence language use, and in Nigeria, Twitter hashtag campaigns have emerged as focal points for examining pragmatic adaptations. This study explores how trending hashtags on Twitter shape the pragmatic strategies of Nigerian users. Hashtag campaigns serve as both tools for information dissemination and markers of social and political identity (Eze, 2023). The pragmatic features associated with these campaigns include the use of humor, irony, and emotive language that foster community engagement and collective action. An analysis of tweets containing popular hashtags will identify recurring pragmatic markers and assess their role in enhancing message persuasiveness and engagement. This research aims to understand the interplay between digital trends and pragmatic expression, highlighting how social media influences language practices in Nigeria. The findings are expected to contribute to sociolinguistics and digital communication studies by providing a framework for analyzing pragmatic shifts in online discourse (Eze, 2023; Balogun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role of Twitter hashtag campaigns in shaping public discourse, there is limited research on their impact on Nigerian pragmatic practices. Existing studies have focused on visual and lexical elements while neglecting the deeper pragmatic nuances that drive social engagement. This gap restricts our understanding of how digital trends influence language use and interaction. Ambiguities in pragmatic markers within hashtag campaigns may lead to misinterpretation and reduced impact. This study seeks to address these issues by analyzing the pragmatic markers in Nigerian Twitter hashtag campaigns, thereby providing insights into their role in shaping digital communication (Eze, 2023; Balogun, 2024).
